What First-Stage Training in Gestalt Therapy Is Like

So, the first stage is a training and therapy group in the Gestalt approach.

This means that throughout the first stage of training the greater part of the attention goes to exploring yourself, your style of making contact and the ways you meet your own experiences and bring what you want into your life.

It is also an acquaintance with the basic concepts of Gestalt therapy, with the focus of exploration being: how do these basic principles show up in my life, how do they shape my actions and the way I meet my needs.

This format always includes:

practical group exercises,

work in pairs and individual work,

short therapy sessions with participants (optional),

lectures.

Attention goes to how each participant builds relationships in life, what helps them and what gets in the way, using the chance to experiment and try things in a new way in our group.

Later these insights about themselves will help the participant when they sit in the therapist’s chair.

At every meeting the group explores some topic from Gestalt theory.

This exploration, however, is practical — through living it out in exercises or sessions.

You can read more about the topics of each meeting on the page: how the training works.

And in general it all begins like this: people with a wish to grow, to learn and to know themselves (and, let me tell you, it is usually interesting company) come together and sit down in a circle, so that over eight meetings they can walk their own path of knowing themselves and the variety of possibilities the world holds, and step by step acquire a new profession.

The nearest start of the First Stage in Gestalt Therapy can be found in the current announcements and on the pages of the institute’s programmes (the dates are updated regularly, so please check the latest information directly on the site).

At the moment enrolment is open for online groups (and sometimes for in-person groups in Kyiv — depending on the current intake and the trainer).
