Psychological Resonance: A Deeper Understanding of Yourself and Others

Psychological resonance: a path to a deeper understanding of yourself and others.

Psychological resonance is the phenomenon of experiencing a deep understanding of, or response to, another person. It is not simply empathy, but the capacity to mirror another’s feelings, state and experience through your own inner world.

In Gestalt therapy resonance has a particular importance: it helps not only to understand the other person better, but also to discover new aspects of your own personality.

How does resonance work?

In the course of therapy the therapist and the client create a space for “resonance”. For example, when the client shares their experiences, the therapist may feel those emotions while still keeping their own subjectivity. This allows the therapist to stay in contact with their own experience and at the same time to respond sensitively to what the client is going through.

Through resonance the client receives not only support but also the chance to see how their emotions are reflected in another person, which sets the process of self-awareness in motion.

How is resonance useful in therapy?

Psychological resonance creates the sense that the client is deeply understood. It works as a bridge between the client’s inner world and the therapist’s experience. When a Gestalt therapist mirrors the client’s emotions, a feeling of acceptance, safety and support arises, and this makes deep inner change possible.

Resonance as a tool for the therapist

The therapist learns not merely to receive the client’s emotions passively, but to actively integrate their own sensations, helping the client become aware of the emotional responses they evoke in other people. The client begins to understand better how their emotions and behaviour affect those around them. This opens up new possibilities for understanding oneself and for building connections with others.

Inner understanding and answers to important questions

Thanks to resonance, clients often find answers to questions that had remained unanswered, and gain confidence in their ability to meet life’s challenges. Resonance becomes an instrument of deep self-knowledge and of discoveries about oneself.
