When others do not understand us. Erich Fromm

If other people do not understand our behaviour — so what?

Their wish that we act only in ways they understand is an attempt to dictate to us. If that means being «antisocial» or «irrational» in their eyes, so be it.

We are not obliged to give others reports or explanations, unless our actions harm them or encroach on their rights.

How many lives have been ruined by this need to «explain», which usually means being «understood», that is, excused.

Let people judge your true intentions by your deeds; but know that a free person owes an explanation only to themselves — to their own reason and conscience — and to those few who have the right to ask for one.

Erich Fromm, «The Art of Being»
