23 Lessons from the Buddha That Will Help You Let Go of Worry

The Buddha is the legendary founder of Buddhism in India. There is nothing in his teaching that would contradict the foundations of inner harmony of any other religious or philosophical tradition.

That is probably why his teaching is so popular and finds a response in so many hearts.

Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.

When the mind is clear, joy follows you like a shadow and never leaves you.

We are shaped by our thoughts. We become what we think about.

The secret of a healthy mind and body is not to grieve over the past, not to worry too much about the future, and to live the present mindfully.

Anger is like holding a burning coal in your palms, meaning to throw it at someone. But it is you it burns first.

Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give it your whole heart and soul.

A fool who knows his own foolishness is wise at least in that, while a fool who considers himself wise is truly, as they say, a fool.

Every morning we are born again. Only what you do now has any real meaning.

There is no fire fiercer than passion, no shark crueller than hatred, and no hurricane more devastating than greed.

Happiness does not depend on who you are or what you have. It depends solely on what you think.

To understand everything is to forgive everything.

Better to be mistaken a thousand times, taking a scoundrel for a saint, than once, taking a saint for a scoundrel.

Hatred will never be wiped out by hatred, but only by love.

All that we are is the result of our thoughts.

The whole secret of existence lies in letting go of fear. Do not fear what will become of you; your future will not change because of it, but your present will become calm.

There is no path to happiness. Happiness is the path.

Pain is inevitable. But suffering is each person’s own choice.

Happiness will never come to one who does not value what he already has.

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and its life will not be made shorter. Happiness does not grow less when it is shared.

If the hand is not wounded, one may carry poison in it. Poison does not harm someone who has no wounds. Whoever does no evil is not subject to evil.

Even a clever person will grow duller if he does not work on himself.

One useful word, on hearing which others become calm, is better than a thousand speeches made up of needless words.

Canal builders guide the water, archers command the arrow, carpenters shape the wood, and the wise subdue themselves.

Conquer yourself and you will win a thousand battles.
