How Gestalt Therapy Works

Gestalt therapy is a method of psychotherapy that helps you understand yourself and the world around you better. Its core idea is that our perception is shaped by experience and by our current needs.

Unfinished situations from the past (so-called “gestalts”) can distort perception and limit what we do. The Gestalt therapist’s task is to help the client focus on being “here and now”, to notice the traces of past difficulties and complete them, so that the present moment can be experienced fully.

The main directions of work in Gestalt therapy

1️⃣ Attention to bodily and emotional sensations The Gestalt therapist teaches the client to observe the continuous flow of their emotions and bodily sensations. This helps them become aware of their inner reactions and understand themselves better.

2️⃣ Strengthening contact with oneself and with others Therapy helps to find where the “contact cycle” breaks down — from awareness of a need to its satisfaction and awareness of the outcome. The client comes to understand why difficulties in communication arise and what gets in the way of building healthy relationships.

3️⃣ Awareness of current needs and responsibility for oneself Gestalt therapy helps the client focus on present-day problems, understand their needs and learn to take responsibility for their own state.

Gestalt therapy for different tasks

Individual therapy for working through anxiety, depression, psychosomatic problems, shyness and difficulties in intimate life.

Group therapy for improving communication and social skills.

Work with couples, and with people going through a divorce or the loss of a loved one or of a job.

Gestalt therapy is an effective way to live the present with awareness, complete old gestalts and develop the inner resources for a harmonious life.
