Working with Couples in Gestalt Therapy: From Functionality to Intimacy

In today’s world, where relationships are often reduced to a simple exchange of resources, the Gestalt approach offers a view of couple interaction of an entirely different order.

Understanding a couple as an open system in constant interaction with its environment opens new perspectives for looking at relationships.

THE POLES OF COUPLE RELATIONSHIPS

Gestalt therapy distinguishes two main types of couple relationship: functional and intimate.

Functional relationships are characterised by an exchange of resources, as between a buyer and a seller, where the interaction is limited to performing specific roles without emotional involvement.

Intimate relationships, by contrast, rest on a deep emotional bond and mutual support, where each partner affects the emotional state of the other.

THE DYNAMICS OF MOVEMENT

No couple exists strictly within one type of relationship.

From time to time couples move between the functional and the intimate pole depending on the situation, the history of their interactions and external circumstances.

One of the key themes in Gestalt therapy is the balance between preserving one’s own individuality and being involved in the couple.

Interaction with others should foster personal growth rather than restrict freedom.

This requires each partner to be able to stay in contact without losing themselves.

THE ROLE OF THE COUNSELLOR

In the Gestalt approach the counsellor treats the couple as a single client. This means that the main attention goes to the interaction between the partners rather than to their individual problems.

Through a variety of methods, the counsellor helps the couple better understand their own relationship and find ways to improve it and to balance functionality with intimacy.

Gestalt couple therapy proposes not avoiding disagreements but looking for ways to resolve them productively.

Through open discussion of their differences and a joint search for solutions, partners can reach greater harmony and understanding.

This approach makes it possible not only to resolve current problems but also to build a solid foundation for the future development of the relationship.
